Where did November go??!! It always seems to race by, with all the holidays and early dismissal days. I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving, and that you were able to meet with your child’s teacher during parent-teacher conferences. Thanks to the Kellogg staff for making conferences possible – it takes a lot of time and energy to schedule all those meetings – and to the parents who took time from their busy schedules to discuss the progress of their kids.
A huge THANKS to Susan Keane for coordinating the Craft Fair on November 8 and 9. I know my daughter had a wonderful time, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the adorable art projects. Thanks also to 6th grade dad Joe Bruzzese for organizing Movie Days, an always popular fundraiser, for the Class of 2013 . All 5 days seemed to be well-attended, and I know he had lots of 6th grade and parent helpers, including Linda Andrews and Yvette Ensign. Kristen Rogers put together a very productive Garden Work Day on November 3, and Staff Appreciation Coordinators Ann Wirtz and Marisa Torres arranged for a red, white and blue Presidential Election Picnic on November 6, in honor of 4th grade teachers Nora Zwehl-Quintero and Barbara Cronin. Thanks to the 4th grade families who contributed to this yummy feast. And last, but not least, 6th grade fundraising Chair Nancy Henrickson (assisted by Toyo Peluso, Debbie Caird, Leslie Spencer, Lisa Boelter, Lisa Fritz Spencer, and Bertha Aguirre ) put in long hours to bring Kellogg its first Fall Harvest Sale. The event was a total success, and Kellogg families were able to buy local produce and goodies, enjoy Pinkberry yogurt, and purchase Kellogg canvas bags and spiritwear. The new pajama bottoms and sweatshirts were a big hit (thanks to designer Bert Haley) and V.P of Ways and Means Robbyn Jackson will be selling them again this month (Fridays, after school), along with the adorable spirit sleeves.
December is a pretty quiet month at Kellogg, but things will really pick up in January, as we start looking ahead to our March 15 Jog-a-thon (save the date now!!) and the Executive Board meets to discuss possible members for the Nominating Committee. That Nominating Committee will be approved at the February 13 Association meeting, and will then begin filling open PTA positions for the 2013-2014 school year, to be posted in mid-March, 30 days before the April 10 Election. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee and/or have an interest in a specific PTA position for next year, please let me know.
Speaking of PTA positions, I am so happy to report that Kim Johnson and Amanda Fry have agreed to serve as Carnival Coordinators (our last open position for this school year). They have some great ideas for this end-of-year annual event, and I am extremely grateful to have them on board!!
Our initial Membership drive is over, and we have more than 225 Kellogg PTA members, many of them new families. It is not too late to join, as membership is open until April 2013, so grab an envelope from the school office and become a part of this exciting and involved organization. If you haven’t already contributed to our Annual Giving Campaign, I would urge you to contribute as generously as your family can. This could be one of the most valuable gifts you give this holiday season – the assured continuation of your child’s enhanced education.
The new Kellogg website is up and running, to rave reviews. The Website Committee gave a short demonstration of the website’s features at the PTA meeting on November 28. Go to www.kellogg.goleta.k12.ca.us, and be sure to check it out.
I am really enjoying Parent Square, and would strongly encourage all of you to accept your teacher’s invitation to join. If you haven’t received an invitation, your teacher probably does not have your e-mail address. Forms are available in the office, so drop in, fill one out, and then become a member of this ever-growing online community. There are pictures from Science Night, Halloween, and the Thanksgiving lunch, reminders about upcoming activities, and much more.
Hope to see you all at the next PTA meeting Wednesday, February 13, at 7 p.m. in the MPR. Bill Banning, the new Superintendent for the Goleta Union School District ,will be in attendance, to introduce himself and discuss his vision for the District, so you don’t want to miss it.
In the meantime, I am always available to answer your PTA questions. Please contact me at 681-9728 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Happy Holidays!!
